US president can initiate military action without prior congressional consent in emergency situations, but must seek approval within 60 days under War Powers Resolution

WASHINGTON: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-April 24th, 2026) US President Donald Trump is nearing a key constitutional deadline, with only one week left to obtain formal approval from Congress for Iran war.

Under the War Powers Resolution, the president can initiate military action without prior congressional consent in emergency situations, but must seek approval within 60 days.

The reports indicatd that public support for the conflict in the United States is declining, increasing political pressure on the administration. At the same time, the US military has reportedly sought an additional $200 billion to meet war-related expenses, further intensifying the situation.

A recent survey by Associated Press shows growing dissatisfaction among Americans over Trump’s economic policies, with 70 percent expressing lack of confidence.

The poll also found that the president’s approval rating has fallen to 33 percent, while 67 percent of respondents voiced dissatisfaction with his overall performance.

The analysts attributed the drop in popularity to domestic challenges, particularly concerns over the economy and inflation, which have not been adequately addressed.

The experts warned that the failure to secure congressional approval within the required timeframe could lead to legal and political complications, potentially affecting both domestic governance and foreign policy.
