LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 29th Mar, 2026) Important steps have been taken in Punjab province to provide relief to government schools from heavy electricity bills, under which a proposal to transfer the electricity tariff of schools from commercial to domestic tariff is under consideration.
According to sources, in this regard, the school education Department Punjab has regularly contacted the government and the Punjab Energy Department to reduce the financial pressure.
According to official sources, this could prove to be a major decision in view of the financial difficulties faced by schools, as a large part of the non-salary budget is spent on paying electricity bills.
The School Education Department releases about Rs 16 billion every year, but despite this, schools continue to face financial pressure.
On the other hand, private educational institutions have also demanded a change in electricity tariffs and after government schools, they are also waiting for relief.
There are more than 38,000 government schools and about 100,000 private schools operating across Punjab, which are expected to benefit significantly from this potential decision.
According to experts, if the change in tariff is approved, the expenses of educational institutions will be significantly reduced and this relief may eventually be passed on to students and parents.
