ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd May, 2026) Pakistan has once again emerged as a beacon of peace and stability in a volatile region, with Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir playing a pivotal role in averting wider conflict as his visit to Tehran during last 24 hours paved the way for a potential breakthrough between Iran and the United States.
This comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that a deal with Iran to end the middle East war could be nearing, stating there is a chance Iran may accept an agreement “as soon as Saturday” and adding, “There is a chance that, whether it’s later today, tomorrow, in a couple days, we may have something to say.”
Rubio also expressed hope for “good news,” signaling visible diplomatic progress.
During the Field Marshal's "short but highly productive" official visit to Iran, the discussions focused on expediting ongoing mediation efforts to promote de-escalation and achieve a conclusive agreement amid regional tensions that persisted after the ceasefire on April 8, 2026.
The Field Marshal held productive meetings with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.
According to an ISPR press release, "The intensive negotiations over resulted in encouraging progress towards a final understanding. The Iranian leadership appreciated Pakistan’s sincere and constructive role in facilitating dialogue and promoting peaceful settlement of regional issues."
Working tirelessly alongside international partners, Pakistan’s leadership has carved out vital diplomatic space, proving that Islamabad is not a silent bystander, but a decisive stakeholder for global peace.
Just weeks ago, the world braced for an apocalypse when US President Donald Trump issued a terrifying ultimatum on Truth Social, warning that "a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again" if Iran did not comply with demands to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>At that moment, Pakistan's leadership successfully brokered an initial ceasefire which was later extended on Pakistan's request, providing invaluable weeks to lay the groundwork for a permanent, comprehensive peace accord.
The role of Pakistan's leadership including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has been widely acknowledged as decisive. They worked day and night to create diplomatic space, pushing efforts toward peace when the region stood on the brink of wider conflict.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly praised Field Marshal Asim Munir in the past, calling him his “favourite field marshal,” a “great fighter,” a “highly respected general,” and an “exceptional human being.” Trump also credited Munir’s influential role in preventing escalation and saving countless lives in previous regional crises, including efforts that helped avert potential nuclear confrontation.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, European leaders and the Gulf leadership strongly commended Pakistan for establishing a lifeline of communication and creating the necessary diplomatic shield that prevented a wider regional explosion.
Pakistan’s mediation reflects its strategic maturity and international credibility. When others warned of war, Pakistan worked for de-escalation with a clear message: dialogue over devastation, peace over escalation, and diplomacy over destruction.
Those who once questioned Islamabad’s diplomatic relevance must now recognize its serious role, respected by major capitals because the nation continues to contribute meaningfully to global peace under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the extraordinary efforts of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
