UNITED NATIONS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th May, 2026) With the world torn by conflict and strife, Pakistan has underscored Buddha’s message of peace, harmony and tranquility for promoting international peace.

"Buddhism is our shared heritage," Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, said at an event marking International Day of Vesak 2026.

"At a time when international landscape is torn by conflict and strife, when individual soul is grappling with spiritual void; the importance of Buddha’s message has increased manifold," he told the gathering organized by the Permanent Missions of Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Other speakers at the event also underlined the need for unity, while highlighting the spiritual leader's teaching for compassion and solidarity with those less fortunate.

In his remarks, the Pakistani envoy said, "Vesak Day reminds us of the remarkable odyssey of Lord Buddha for enlightenment, and his soul-stirring message of mindfulness, peace, compassion and love, which are the essence of humanity."

Highlighting Buddhism’s connection with Pakistan, Ambassador Asim Ahmad said the religion was reinvigorated in the ancient land of Gandharain Pakistan.

The Gandhara civilization flourished from 1st century B.C. to 7th century A.D, it was pointed out, and its best expression was found in Gandhara art which captivates Buddha’s life and message.

"Gandhara civilization also established Pakistan’s linkages with the Buddhist countries of South and East Asia," the Pakistani envoy said.

"Year round, monks and other visitors from these regions arrive at the Buddhist seminaries of Pakistan, to Taxila, Swat, Takht-e- Bahi and more."

The legacy of Buddhist Gandhara, he said, was woven into Pakistan’s socio-cultural fabric that has motivated Islamabad's advocacy for interfaith harmony and co-existence, such as that manifested in the General Assembly resolution titled, “promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, understanding and cooperation for peace” jointly tabled by the Philippines and Pakistan.

"Pakistan will continue working with the international community to promote the universal message of Buddha for international peace, harmony and tranquility," Ambassador Asim Ahmad said in conclusion.
