ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 27th May, 2026) Speaker of National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has said that May 28, 1998 is a historic and momentous day in Pakistan’s history when the country successfully conducted nuclear tests, rendering its defence invincible and emerging as the first nuclear power in the Muslim world and the seventh in the world.
He expressed these views on the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer, which is observed annually across the country with great zeal and patriotic fervour.
Ayaz Sadiq said that Youm-e-Takbeer stands as a symbol of national sovereignty, invincible defence, stability and unwavering national resolve.
He said the day reminds the nation of the historic sacrifices, decisions and leadership that laid a strong foundation for Pakistan’s defence.
Ayaz Sadiq said that May 28 marks an epoch-making day in the history of Pakistan.
The Speaker said that it was the bold and statesmanlike decision of the then Prime Minister, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, to conduct six nuclear tests in response to India’s five nuclear tests, while rejecting immense international pressure and lucrative financial offers, thereby making Pakistan’s defence invincible and restoring the strategic balance in the region.
He said that the entire Pakistani nation stands in solidarity with this historic decision.
The Speaker also paid rich tribute to the former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who laid the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme and played a historic role in safeguarding national security.

He said that the armed forces remain fully prepared to defend the country’s borders and respond to all kinds of threats, and the nation takes great pride in its brave forces.
Ayaz Sadiq said that Pakistan’s nuclear programme is solely aimed at national defence, maintenance of peace and ensuring strategic balance in the region.
He said that all the eminent scientists, engineers, and technical experts involved in this national endeavour deserve the nation’s highest appreciation and recognition.
Ayaz Sadiq said that these individuals completed this entire programme on the basis of complete self-reliance, without any external assistance, bringing it successfully to fruition through their dedication, expertise, and commitment.
He said that Youm-e-Takbeer is a day to set aside differences and renew the commitment to work together for national stability, progress, and prosperity, and to contribute towards making Pakistan a strong, prosperous, and developed state.
Ayaz Sadiq also expressed gratitude to Allah Almighty for Pakistan’s strong defence and prayed for the country’s prosperity, security, and stability, as well as lasting peace in the region.
