TAXILA, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 1st May, 2026) The sacred festival of Vesak was observed with religious devotion and international participation at the historic Dharmarajika Stupa in Taxila on Friday, showcasing Pakistan’s rich Gandhara heritage.

Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, addressing the ceremony as chief guest at the Taxila Museum, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Pakistan’s cultural and religious heritage, particularly the globally significant Gandharan Buddhist legacy.

He said Pakistan, as custodian of this ancient heritage, is responsible for protecting these historic sites while also sharing them with the world. He added that efforts are underway to improve conservation practices, strengthen site management, and promote sustainable cultural tourism, including facilitating international pilgrims and visitors.

The minister also appreciated the cooperation of international scholars and institutions in the research and preservation of Buddhist heritage, noting that Vesak represents universal values of peace, compassion, non-violence, and understanding that remain relevant in today’s world.

The event included a peace prayer ceremony organized by the Punjab Tourism, Archaeology and Museums Department in collaboration with Buddhist representatives from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, Vietnam, and Myanmar. The rituals were performed at the ancient stupa, historically associated with Emperor Ashoka.

The ceremony featured traditional offerings led by a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, followed by a Dhamma sermon. Diplomats, scholars, devotees, and visitors attended the event, underscoring Pakistan’s growing role in Buddhist heritage tourism and interfaith harmony.
