LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th May, 2026) United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Pakistan Representative Pernille Ironside on Tuesday called on Chairperson Child Protection and Welfare Bureau (CPWB) Sarah Ahmad and discussed ongoing initiatives and future collaboration for strengthening child protection systems in Punjab.

During the meeting, Pernille Ironside presented an appreciation certificate to Sarah Ahmad in recognition of her efforts regarding the Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2026.

On the occasion, Sarah Ahmad expressed gratitude to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb for their support in the passage of the bill, terming it a significant step towards safeguarding children’s rights.

She also thanked Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan for his role in ensuring the bill’s approval, and acknowledged the contributions of all assembly members for their cooperation in achieving the landmark legislation.

Highlighting progress under the chief minister’s vision, Sarah Ahmad said notable advancements have been made in the child protection sector through coordinated efforts and institutional reforms.

The UNICEF delegation was briefed on various initiatives of the CPWB, including rescue services, rehabilitation centres, and mechanisms for protecting vulnerable children.

Pernille Ironside appreciated the measures taken by the Punjab government for the protection and welfare of children, and emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration to address emerging challenges.

Both sides agreed to further strengthen mutual cooperation to enhance child protection systems.

Sarah Ahmad underscored that global partnerships are essential to ensure a safe and secure future for children, and reaffirmed the bureau’s commitment to improving service delivery with the support of international partners. She also acknowledged the support of UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) in advancing efforts related to the Child Marriage Restraint Bill, terming it a valuable contribution towards child welfare initiatives in the province.
