MIRPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Apr, 2026) A high-profile conference on Kashmir, held at the British Parliament in London on Thursday, has voiced deep concern over what participants described as a rapidly worsening human rights situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Convened under the guiding principles of human dignity, justice, and fundamental freedoms, the gathering underscored the urgency of addressing alleged violations and restoring civil liberties across the region.

Speakers at the conference reaffirmed the primacy of international human rights law, calling for accountability, due process, and the protection of basic freedoms. The forum emphasized that sustainable peace in the region hinges on justice and transparency, urging authorities to end arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, and excessive use of force. Delegates stressed that safeguarding civil liberties, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and movement, remains an immediate and non-negotiable priority.

A key focus of the deliberations was the demand for the unconditional release of political prisoners, including Yasin Malik, currently held in Tihar Jail.

The conference called for fair and transparent legal proceedings, insisting that detainees be granted full access to legal representation and tried before independent and impartial courts. It also advocated the repeal of what it termed “restrictive and draconian laws,” including the Public Safety Act (PSA), Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), citing their impact on fundamental freedoms.

The conference further expressed solidarity with peaceful civic movements, including the Awami Action Committee, and endorsed their calls for political representation and socio-economic justice. It urged enhanced international engagement, recommending independent judicial oversight, access for global human rights observers, and unrestricted media coverage in the region. Concluding on a resolute note, participants reiterated that the future of Jammu and Kashmir should be determined through the free and democratic will of its people, in an environment free from fear and coercion.
