The programme, titled “OIC-COMSTECH and Prime Institute of Health Sciences Joint Training Programme in Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Sciences for Yemen,” was formally launched at the COMSTECH Secretariat in Islamabad on Friday.
Under the initiative, an initial batch of 25 Yemeni healthcare professionals, including nurses and allied health workers, will receive specialized professional training in Pakistan.
The programme aims to enhance technical skills, clinical competencies and modern healthcare practices, particularly in maternal and child healthcare, nursing, community healthcare and allied health sciences.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Coordinator General OIC-COMSTECH Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary said the programme reflects COMSTECH’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems across OIC member states through education, training and human resource development.
He noted that Yemen has faced immense challenges in recent years, placing extraordinary pressure on its healthcare infrastructure and workforce.
He emphasized that investment in healthcare professionals remains one of the most sustainable and effective ways to strengthen national healthcare systems and improve public well-being.
Highlighting COMSTECH’s broader support for Yemen, he informed participants that the organization has recently launched the second phase of its fellowship and scholarship programme for Yemeni citizens living in Yemen, under which more than 100 Yemeni scholars are expected to benefit. He added that the newly launched healthcare training programme represents the fourth major capacity-building initiative undertaken by COMSTECH for Yemen in recent years.
Addressing the ceremony, Ambassador of the Republic of Yemen to Pakistan, Mohammed Motahar Alashabi, described the initiative as a practical manifestation of solidarity and cooperation among OIC member states.
He said the programme represents an investment in Yemen’s future, particularly in the development of qualified healthcare professionals who are essential for rebuilding and strengthening the country’s healthcare sector.

He stated that the programme goes beyond conventional training and represents a long-term commitment to building professional capacities within Yemen’s healthcare sector.
He assured participants that the institute would provide modern, hands-on training aligned with international standards and would continue extending academic support, mentorship and professional guidance to Yemeni trainees.
Participants were informed that the programme may be expanded following the successful completion of the first batch, enabling a larger number of Yemeni healthcare professionals to benefit from advanced training opportunities in Pakistan.
The launching ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Embassy of Yemen, COMSTECH, Prime Institute of Health Sciences, Health Services Academy, University of Chenab, healthcare professionals, academics, development experts and members of the media.
