In a letter addressed to President Trump and posted on social media platform X, Gabbard says she will step down effective June 30 to care for her husband, Abraham Williams, who has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer
WASAHINGTON: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 23rd, 2026) US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation, citing urgent family health concerns, bringing an end to her tenure as the country’s top intelligence official under President Donald Trump.
In a letter addressed to President Trump and posted on social media platform X, Gabbard said she would step down effective June 30 to care for her husband, Abraham Williams, who has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.
“My husband has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer and faces significant medical challenges in the coming months.
I must step away from public service to support him during this difficult time,” she wrote.
Gabbard, 45, said her decision was deeply personal and driven by her responsibility toward her family, adding that she was grateful for the opportunity to serve in the intelligence role, which involved coordinating national and global security assessments for the US President.
President Donald Trump praised her service following the announcement, describing her performance as “outstanding” and acknowledging her decision to prioritise her husband’s health.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>He also confirmed that Deputy Director Aaron Lukas would serve as acting Director of National Intelligence until a permanent replacement is named.
A former Democratic congresswoman, Gabbard was considered an unconventional choice for the intelligence post due to her past criticism of US foreign interventions and intelligence policies.
Her nomination had previously drawn scrutiny over her foreign policy views and past diplomatic engagements.
During her tenure, she was occasionally viewed as being out of step with key administration positions, particularly on foreign policy decisions and assessments related to Iran and other security matters.
Gabbard, a US Army veteran who served in Iraq, has long been known for her anti-war stance and advocacy for reduced foreign military engagement.
She transitioned from the Democratic Party to the Republican side in recent years before joining Trump’s cabinet.
Her resignation marks a significant change in the US intelligence leadership at a time of heightened global security concerns.
