Students showcase AI solutions for air pollution at SmogNet Datathon in Mardan

PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd May, 2026) Code for Pakistan in collaboration with University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Mardan, organized the “SmogNet Datathon,” a one-day Data Science and Artificial Intelligence challenge aimed at addressing Pakistan’s growing air pollution issues through technology and innovation.

Held at the university campus in Mardan, the event brought together 126 students, innovators, mentors and volunteers from various academic and technical backgrounds to explore practical solutions for environmental challenges using Data Science and AI applications.

Nearly 20 teams from different educational institutions, including University of Science and Technology Bannu, Post Graduate College Mardan and UET Mardan, participated in the competition. Around 30 female students also took part in the datathon.

Participants worked on real-world Pakistani environmental data sets featuring hourly pollutant measurements, including PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO and O3, to develop solutions related to air quality monitoring, pollution analysis and smart public alert systems.

The event was focused on promoting practical understanding of AI and Data Science while encouraging students to use technology for healthier and safer communities.

Teams developed projects related to air quality monitoring and anomaly detection, pollution source analysis, data mapping, and smart public awareness systems aimed at translating environmental data into user-friendly recommendations.

The projects were evaluated on implementation strategies, dashboard design, pollution trend visualization, predictive analysis and integration of public alert mechanisms.

The judging panel included Prof. Dr. Muhammad Usman, Dr. Tariq Sadad, Dr. Inayat Khan, Muhammad Ibrahim Ahmed, Sajjid Khan, Shehzad Ahmad, Asad Khan, Dr. Bilal Khan and Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Gull Muhammad.

Team “Brain Hackers,” comprising Waleed Hassan and Hamza Ali, secured first position for their innovative solution, while “Algo Titans” and “Analytical Squad” got second and third positions, respectively.

Cash prizes of Rs 25,000, Rs15,000 and Rs10,000 respectively were awarded to the first, second and third top along with certificates and souvenirs. Code for Pakistan also recognized “Young Stars” and “Code Titans” as favourite teams for their creativity and innovative approaches.

Organizers said the event promoted collaborative learning, mentorship and practical problem-solving while creating awareness about environmental and public health challenges through civic technology initiatives.

Representatives of Code for Pakistan and UET Mardan reaffirmed their commitment to supporting innovation, research and technology-driven learning opportunities for youth in Pakistan.
