Spotify is rolling out a new “Verified by Spotify” badge in a major step aimed at restoring trust and transparency on the platform amid the rapid rise of AI-generated music.
The feature which will begin rolling out in the coming weeks is designed to clearly distinguish real artists from AI-created personas. A green checkmark will appear on verified artist profiles and in search results, signaling that the creator is an authentic human musician rather than a synthetic identity.
At launch Spotify says the system will help users identify nearly 99% of the artists they actively search for spanning hundreds of thousands of profiles across the platform.
The move comes as AI-generated content increasingly floods music streaming platforms, raising concerns over originality, copyright, and artistic authenticity. Despite earlier moderation efforts Spotify has faced growing criticism over what many describe as an overload of AI-generated or low-quality content.
The new badge is intended to give listeners a quick and reliable way to separate genuine musicians from machine-generated outputs, reinforcing credibility in an increasingly blurred digital music landscape.
Spotify has outlined strict criteria for eligibility. Artists must demonstrate consistent listener engagement, maintain a strong standing on the platform, and comply with Spotify’s policies.
Importantly the company has clarified that verification will not be purely automated. Instead a dedicated review team will manually evaluate applications, combining platform data with human assessment to ensure accuracy and fairness.
At launch profiles representing primarily AI-generated or AI-persona artists will not be eligible for verification. However Spotify has left the door open for future changes, noting that evolving definitions of “authenticity” may reshape how AI creators are treated on the platform.
Spotify’s move reflects a broader industry trend as platforms struggle to adapt to the rise of artificial intelligence in creative spaces.
Gaming platform Steam has already introduced AI disclosure labels while several social media networks are labeling or flagging AI-generated content. Meanwhile the publishing world has also seen growing scrutiny, with some works removed over undisclosed AI usage.
As the debate intensifies, Spotify’s new badge marks a significant step in the ongoing battle between human creativity and artificial intelligence a line the industry is still trying to define.
