Officials say nearly 35 percent of total currency notes printed annually in Pakistan consist of Rs10 notes, placing a substantial burden on printing resources and expenditure
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Feb 27th, 2026) The Federal cabinet has initiated formal consideration of a proposal to replace the Rs10 banknote with a coin, a move officials say could generate savings of Rs40 billion to Rs50 billion for the national exchequer over the next decade.
The cabinet had earlier constituted a high-level committee under the leadership of the finance minister and directed it to examine whether the Rs10 note should be withdrawn from circulation. The committee was tasked with reviewing financial, operational and legal aspects of Currency management before submitting its recommendations.
According to sources, the committee has now submitted its currency management report to the cabinet. The report was prepared in line with applicable laws and in consultation with the State Bank of Pakistan and the Security Printing Corporation of Pakistan.
The findings indicate that the average lifespan of a Rs10 banknote is between six and nine months due to frequent handling and wear and tear. In contrast, a Rs10 coin can remain in circulation for 20 to 30 years, significantly reducing replacement and printing costs.
Officials noted that nearly 35 percent of the total currency notes printed annually in Pakistan consist of Rs10 notes, placing a substantial burden on printing resources and expenditure. The report estimates that replacing the note with a coin could result in cumulative savings of at least Rs40 billion to Rs50 billion over a 10-year period.
A final decision on the discontinuation of the Rs10 note will be taken by the federal cabinet after reviewing the committee’s recommendations.
