Prof. Dr. Farooq Afzal and Prof. Dr. Asif Bashir say centre will provide round-the-clock emergency and specialised treatment for children from across country

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-April 22nd, 2026) A major development in the province’s healthcare system has been achieved under the “Healthy Punjab” initiative of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, with the establishment of Pakistan’s first dedicated Pediatric Stroke Center at Lahore General Hospital in collaboration with the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences (PINS).

The centre was inaugurated by Principal Ameer-ud-Din Medical College Prof. Dr. Farooq Afzal, Executive Director PINS Prof. Dr. Asif Bashir, and Prof. Sajid Maqbool. Officials described the facility as a significant step forward in specialised care for children suffering from neurological emergencies.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Farooq Afzal and Prof. Dr. Asif Bashir said the centre will provide round-the-clock emergency and specialised treatment for children from across the country. They added that the facility has been developed in line with international standards and offers complete services including emergency diagnosis, advanced treatment, and rehabilitation free of cost.

Medical experts at the event noted that timely treatment of stroke in children is critical, as delayed intervention can lead to lifelong disabilities.

They said the new centre aims to ensure rapid response and comprehensive care under one roof, improving survival and recovery outcomes.

Prof. Dr. Asif Bashir highlighted that pediatric stroke diagnosis had previously been difficult due to limited resources and expertise. He said the availability of advanced equipment and trained specialists would now help in early detection, reduce mortality, and minimise the risk of permanent neurological damage.

Other senior doctors, including Prof. Qasim Bashir and Prof. Faryad Hussain, clarified a common misconception that stroke only occurs in adults. They urged parents and teachers to remain alert to early warning signs in children and to seek immediate medical attention instead of relying on self-treatment.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior medical professionals including Prof. Muhammad Shahid, MS PINS Dr. Omar Ishaq, Dr. Yahya Sultan, Dr. Abdul Aziz, Dr. Hammad Arif, Dr. Anum Batool, Dr. Sanam Allah Yar, Dr. Sundas Tahir, Nursing Superintendent Saima Fateh, along with a large number of neurologists and healthcare experts.
