Punjab govt's big move to eliminate extremism

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th May, 2026) The Punjab government's has taken a big move to eliminate extremism as Punjab Center of Excellence on Countering Violent Extremism has been made an autonomous institution.

The Standing Committee on Legislation and Privatization approved the amendment bill. Approval was given to give permanent succession, joint seal and legal powers to the institution. The institution will be able to acquire, transfer and file cases in its own name.

The Act 2025 was amended after the objections of the Law Department.

The Home Department had submitted a summary to grant the institution formal autonomous status. The Finance Department gave in-principle approval on the condition of meeting the expenses from the current budget.

According to officials, the move aims to make the counter-extremism system more effective. The institution's administrative autonomy is expected to improve inter-agency coordination and policy implementation.
