PU plants Miyawaki forest on 2 acres

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 11th May, 2026) On the direction of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali, a Miyawaki forest has been established over two acres of land at the New Campus of Punjab University under an ongoing plantation campaign aimed at enhancing the university’s green cover and environmental sustainability.

In this regard, a ceremony was held on Monday at the ground adjacent to the PU Health Center, where the plantation drive was formally inaugurated by planting Miyawaki saplings over the designated land. The event was attended by Director General Student Affairs, Estate & Security Prof. Dr. Rehan Sadiq Shaikh, Resident Officer-II Prof. Dr. Majid Khan, Chief Conservator of the Forest Department Sheikh Saqib, faculty members from various departments, forest officials and a large number of students.

Addressing the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali said that around 10,000 Miyawaki trees have been planted under the new campaign, adding that Punjab University is playing a proactive role in improving the environment.

He said the university reclaimed land that had remained under illegal occupation for the past 50 years and transformed it into a Miyawaki forest as a gift to the city of Lahore.

He further said that due to the lush green environment of the campus, hundreds of migratory bird species visit the university each year. He also remarked that tree plantation is a Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) and a highly virtuous act, encouraging students to actively participate in such environmental initiatives.

Chief Conservator Sheikh Saqib described Miyawaki plantations as an advanced form of urban forestry and an effective tool to combat climate change, noting that these forests have a higher capacity for carbon absorption and oxygen production. He termed the initiative of establishing a Miyawaki forest in the heart of the city as a significant and forward-looking step by Punjab University.

Prof. Dr. Majid Khan also highlighted that 10,000 Miyawaki saplings have been planted at the New Campus as part of the ongoing environmental drive.
