PPP to observe black day on July 5 to mark anniversary of 1977 military coup

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd Jul, 2026) Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will observe Black Day across the country on Sunday to mark the anniversary of the overthrow of the democratic government on July 5, 1977, and to reaffirm its commitment to democratic values and constitutional supremacy.

According to the party spokesperson on Friday, seminars, prayer gatherings and protest programmes will be held nationwide to highlight the importance of democracy, the rule of the constitution and the people's right to govern. Separate events are also being arranged by the PPP Central Punjab Secretariat and the Lahore organization.

The party leadership stated that the observance aims to remember the events of July 5, 1977, when the then Army Chief, General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, ousted the government of elected Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and imposed martial law in the country.

It maintained that the sacrifices made by party workers and the public kept the democratic struggle alive and eventually led to the restoration of democracy in Pakistan.

PPP Central Punjab President Raja Pervaiz Ashraf directed the party's General Secretary, Syed Hassan Murtaza, to instruct all divisional, district, city, tehsil and subsidiary organizations to hold programmes marking the occasion. Syed Hassan Murtaza said that observing Black Day is intended to preserve the memory of past events, renew the pledge to protect democratic traditions.
