PNCA opens retrospective exhibition of artist Akram Dost Baloch

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th May, 2026) A rich tapestry of Balochistan’s culture, identity and lived realities came into focus at the retrospective exhibition opened at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), showcasing the works of acclaimed Pakistani artist and sculptor Akram Dost Baloch to celebrate his decades-long contribution to contemporary art and cultural heritage.

Organized in collaboration with Nomad Gallery and curated by Nageen Hyat, the exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Maen Khreasat, Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, as chief guest.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Director General PNCA M. Ayoub Jamali, diplomats, artists, members of civil society and art enthusiasts.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Maen Khreasat said Akram Dost Baloch’s work reflected the resilience and cultural richness of Balochistan and highlighted the role of art in preserving identity and building bridges between communities and cultures.

He appreciated PNCA and Nomad Gallery for promoting important cultural narratives through the exhibition.

Curator Nageen Hyat paid tribute to the lifelong artistic contribution of Akram Dost Baloch and stressed the importance of preserving and documenting Pakistan’s artistic heritage through collaborative cultural initiatives.

Visual artist and Head of Fine Arts Department at National College of Arts, Aqeel Solangi, said the artist’s work reflected the collective consciousness of Balochistan and explored themes of identity, socio-political realities and the human condition with remarkable depth and honesty.

Hailing from Nushki, Akram Dost Baloch is regarded as one of Pakistan’s leading contemporary artists and a pioneering figure in the visual arts of Balochistan. His paintings and sculptures draw inspiration from traditional Baloch motifs, embroidery, weaving and wood carving while presenting them through a contemporary visual language.

A graduate of the National College of Arts, he also served as a founding faculty member and former chairperson of the Fine Arts Department at University of Balochistan. In recognition of his distinguished services to the arts, he was awarded the Pride of Performance in 2004.

The retrospective exhibition features selected works from his acclaimed “Identity” series along with other major works exploring themes of culture, memory, identity and belonging. It also highlights his academic research on traditional Baloch embroidery and handicrafts.

The exhibition has been organized as part of PNCA’s ongoing efforts to promote Pakistan’s artistic heritage and acknowledge the contributions of senior artists who have played a significant role in shaping the country’s cultural landscape.

The organizers also acknowledged the support of Bestway Group Pakistan for sponsoring the exhibition and supporting the promotion of arts and culture in Pakistan.

The exhibition will remain open for public viewing until May 24 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, except Fridays and Saturdays.
