HYDERABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Jul, 2026) Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad Fayaz Hussain Abbasi has said that eradicating thalassemia and other genetic disorders requires not only medicines but also collective awareness and consistent efforts.
“Our conscience will be satisfied only when we take practical steps for the welfare of humanity,” he said while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the “Thalassemia and Genetic Disorder Prevention Centre” established with the support of Ahmed Bachai Welfare Trust in Abdullah City, Qasimabad.
According to a handout issued here on Friday, the Divisional Commissioner said that every institution, social organization and individual would have to play their role in preventing this fatal disease, and the district administration would extend all possible support to the mission.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Zain-ul-Abidin Memon said that cousin marriages were a major reason behind the increasing prevalence of thalassemia.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>He urged parents that if there was already a thalassemia patient in the family, then screening of young boys and girls must be carried out before marriage to prevent the disease from being passed on to future generations.
Secretary Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority Dr. Duranaz Jamal and Dr. Haroon informed that the new centre would provide free facilities to deserving patients. The services include Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) to detect thalassemia in the fetus during pregnancy, thalassemia screening and genetic testing before and after marriage to identify carriers.
The ceremony was attended in large numbers by health department officials, social leaders, office bearers of the trust and representatives of various sectors.
