National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) warns against demanding physical copies, saying that both are same

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-March 13rd, 2026) The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Friday directed government offices, public and financial institutions, and telecom operators to accept digital identity cards as legally valid, cautioning against requiring physical copies of the CNIC.

In its statement, NADRA emphasized that digital ID cards carry the same legal status as the traditional Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC). The authority noted that some offices continue to demand physical cards or photocopies, a practice that contravenes existing laws and regulations.

This directive is part of NADRA’s ongoing efforts to promote digitalization and ensure secure, efficient, and legally recognized identity verification across Pakistan.

The authority clarified that under the NADRA Ordinance, Regulations 9 and 10 provide full legal recognition to digital identity credentials, confirming them as valid proof of identity.

NADRA said the adoption of digital identity cards reduces the need for unnecessary CNIC photocopies and strengthens the protection of citizens’ personal data. It also helps prevent misuse of identification information.

The authority urged all relevant institutions to ensure compliance with the directive. Citizens who face difficulties in having their digital IDs recognized have been advised to lodge complaints through NADRA’s official complaint management system.
