KP govt reaffirms labour commitment as WAPDA union holds May Day protest

KOHAT, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 1st May, 2026) The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Wednesday reiterated its commitment to safeguarding workers’ rights on International Labour Day, while a WAPDA Hydro Labour Union protest highlighted ongoing labour grievances.

In a message on Labour Day, Special Assistant for Information Shafi Jan paid tribute to workers, describing them as the backbone of society whose efforts are essential for progress and development. He said the day serves as a reminder of justice, equality, and workers’ rights, stressing that their welfare remains a top priority of the provincial government.

He said the KP government is pursuing labour-friendly policies, ensuring implementation of labour laws, social security measures, and access to basic facilities such as health and education. He added that the minimum wage in the province has been set at Rs.

40,000, calling it a step toward improving workers’ living standards.

Meanwhile, the WAPDA Hydro Labour Union staged a protest demonstration on Labour Day, attended by a large number of workers who voiced concerns over what they described as long-standing injustices and unmet demands.

Union Chairman Younas Shah said workers remain the backbone of society but continue to face deprivation of their basic rights. He urged the Federal government to address labour demands on a priority basis.

Another speaker, Syed Essa, said injustices against workers persist and called for practical reforms to improve labour conditions. Protesters carried banners and placards demanding rights, vowing to continue their struggle until their demands are fulfilled.
