Larijani while addressing US Defence Secretary Hegseth says Iranian leaders have been, and still are, among their people but your leaders are on Epstein’s island

TEHRAN: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-March 13rd, 2026) Iranian security chief Ali Larijani on Friday ridiculed US Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth’s claim that Iranian leaders were “hiding like rats,” highlighting that senior officials, including the president, recently made public appearances at a rally in Tehran.

Posting on X, Larijani wrote, “Mr Hegseth! Our leaders have been, and still are, among the people. But your leaders? On Epstein’s island!” — referring to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who had connections with powerful figures in the United States.

In a separate development, European countries are engaging with Iran to secure maritime safety. The Financial Times reported on Friday that France and Italy have opened talks with Tehran to negotiate guarantees for the safe passage of their vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the initiative aims to protect vital shipping routes and prevent disruptions amid growing regional tensions.

Reuters has not independently verified the report.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial corridor for global oil shipments, and ensuring uninterrupted navigation is seen as vital for energy markets. The talks by France and Italy reflect international efforts to maintain stability in the region without escalating conflicts.

These developments come amid heightened middle East tensions, with Iran asserting its presence domestically and internationally, even as foreign powers continue to monitor the country’s strategic moves closely.
