Mahdi Taj, President of the Iran Football Federation, says decision follows remarks by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that it might be unsafe for the Iranian team to travel to the US

TEHRAN: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-March 17th, 2026) Iran on Tuesday formally requested that its matches in the FIFA World Cup 2026 be relocated from the United States to Mexico, citing security concerns for its national football team.

Mahdi Taj, President of the Iran Football Federation, said the decision follows remarks by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that it might be unsafe for the Iranian team to travel to the US. “If Trump himself says it’s not safe for us to go to America, then we will not go,” Taj stated.

He added that discussions are ongoing to move Iran’s matches to Mexico, though such a move could present logistical challenges for FIFA, which must coordinate the tournament schedule across three host countries.

British media reports indicate that FIFA is unlikely to fully accept Iran’s request.

FIFA, in response, confirmed it is in contact with all member associations, including Iran, regarding arrangements for the 2026 World Cup.

The request comes after Iran previously announced it would not participate in the tournament if held in the United States. Iranian Minister of sports Ahmad Donyamali said the decision was influenced by the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader by US actions, making participation in the US-hosted matches impossible.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
