Sources say Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is expected to hold meetings with senior Iranian officials during the visit to discuss key regional and international matters, including ongoing talks between Iran and the United States
RAWALPINDI: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 22nd, 2026) Chief of Defence Force (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has departed for an official visit to Iran, according to security sources.
Sources said Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is expected to hold meetings with senior Iranian officials during the visit to discuss key regional and international matters, including ongoing talks between Iran and the United States.
The visit comes at a time of heightened diplomatic activity surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and wider middle East security concerns.
Meanwhile, a senior United Arab Emirates official said there was only a “50-50” possibility of a successful agreement between Washington and Tehran that could ease tensions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash said Iranian authorities had previously failed to capitalise on opportunities for diplomatic progress due to what he described as an overestimation of their negotiating position.
Separately, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there had been “slight progress” in negotiations with Iran.
Speaking before a NATO meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden, Rubio criticised Iran’s reported tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it “unacceptable” and urging the international community to oppose such measures.
He also expressed hope that tensions would not escalate further during the ongoing negotiations.
