ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th May, 2026) The Federal Shariat Court on Monday declared that attempting suicide constitutes a crime, striking down a

2022 legislative provision that had decriminalized the act.

A three member bench, comprising Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, Justice Muhammad Anwar Iqbal,

and Justice Ameer Khan announced a reserved judgment on petitions challenging the 2022 legislation.

Advocates Hammad Hassan Dar and Azam Malik represented the petitioners.

The court declared the legislation un-Islamic and nullified it, accepting the petitions against the 2022 act.

According to the petitioners counsel, the 2022 legislation had removed the provision that criminalized

attempted suicide. The Shariat Court has now restored the section of the Criminal Procedure Code

that had been deleted through that act.

With the court ruling, attempting suicide will once again be considered a criminal offense under

Pakistani law. The judgment effectively reverses the earlier decriminalization of attempted

suicide.

The court found that the 2022 legislation removing criminal penalties for attempted suicide was repugnant

to Islamic law.
