ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 27th Apr, 2026) Mental health experts are increasingly highlighting the positive impact of maintaining a clean and organized home on overall psychological well-being, noting that simple household chores can play a meaningful role in reducing stress and anxiety.
As awareness about mental health continues to grow, experts suggest that maintaining a clean home should be viewed not merely as a domestic responsibility but also as an important component of self-care.
Talking to APP, Sidra tul Muntaha, a clinical psychologist, said that cluttered environments often contribute to feelings of overwhelm and mental fatigue. Disorganized spaces, she explained, can serve as constant visual reminders of unfinished tasks, making it difficult for individuals to focus or relax. In contrast, a clean and orderly home fosters a sense of control and stability, helping to ease daily stress.
She further explained that engaging in routine cleaning activities—such as sweeping, organizing, or decluttering—can have therapeutic value. These tasks provide a structured and productive outlet, allowing individuals to shift their attention away from negative thoughts while achieving small, tangible goals. This sense of accomplishment can significantly improve mood and motivation.
“Cleaning can act as a simple yet effective coping mechanism,” she noted, adding that it not only improves the physical environment but also contributes to a clearer and calmer state of mind.
Another clinical psychologist, Mawra, serving at a government hospital, told APP that research in behavioral science suggests maintaining order in one’s surroundings can enhance concentration, improve sleep quality, and support better decision-making. A tidy space, she said, reduces distractions and creates a more conducive environment for both work and rest.
However, she cautioned against excessive or compulsive cleaning, which may have the opposite effect and increase anxiety. She recommended adopting a balanced approach by incorporating manageable daily routines rather than striving for perfection. Simple habits—such as making the bed, organizing workspaces, and setting aside time for light cleaning—can make a noticeable difference over time.
According to research cited by the Harvard business Review, physical environments play a significant role in cognition, emotions, and behavior. An untidy space can reduce the ability to focus and increase stress and anxiety levels.
Psychologists emphasize that consistency, rather than intensity, is key to achieving long-term mental health benefits.
