Electricity consumers paying up to Rs9 per unit in additional taxes

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 18th, 2026) Electricity consumers in Pakistan are being charged nearly Rs9 per unit in additional taxes, with multiple levies now included in power bills, according to official details.

It has emerged that the Federal board of Revenue (FBR) is increasingly using the energy sector as a key avenue for tax collection, resulting in the addition of several taxes and duties in electricity bills.

At present, electricity bills reportedly include around six different tax components, including an 18 percent General Sales Tax (GST), income tax, and advance tax.

The cumulative effect of these levies has pushed the additional tax burden to around Rs9 per unit, significantly increasing financial pressure on both domestic and industrial consumers across the country.
