Chief Minister vows consensus plan on local government continuity

PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd Mar, 2026) Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Muhammad Suhail Afridi, on Tuesday met a delegation of local government representatives to deliberate on matters concerning the expiry of local bodies’ tenure on March 15.

The chief minister emphasized that a consensus-based strategy would be devised to ensure the continuity of the local government system.

He said the Speaker of the Provincial Assembly would be instructed to constitute a committee comprising members from both treasury and opposition benches.

The meeting was informed that the committee would convene within the week and finalize its recommendations before March 15.

The proposed mechanism would focus on maintaining the existing system until fresh local government elections are conducted.

After the assurance by the Chief Minister, the Local Council Association agreed to defer its planned strike. The committee will also take into account the stance of the nominated members of the Local Council board.

Provincial Minister for Local Government, Meena Khan Afridi and senior officials of the department were also present. The delegation was led by Mayor of Mardan, Himayatullah.
