Like the rest of the world, World Earth Day was observed across Azad Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday with renewed calls to raise public awareness about environmental degradation and the urgent need to protect natural resources

MIRPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Apr, 2026) Like the rest of the world, World Earth Day was observed across Azad Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday with renewed calls to raise public awareness about environmental degradation and the urgent need to protect natural resources.

This year’s observance highlighted the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” alongside reflections on the evolving focus of Earth Day campaigns since its inception in 1970. Officials noted that Earth Day 2026 marks its 56th anniversary, with the broader global theme “Planet vs. Plastics” emphasizing collective action to restore ecosystems, combat climate change, and preserve biodiversity.

In Mirpur, a large Earth Day walk was organized, bringing together students, teachers, social workers, volunteers, and representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency AJK. The walk was followed by a ceremony where speakers stressed the importance of educating the public about environmental challenges and safeguarding natural resources such as water bodies, mountains, wildlife, and deserts.

Participants, particularly students, were also engaged through educational models illustrating the significance of environmental conservation. Speakers underlined that protecting the earth is essential to ensure a livable future for coming generations, while urging collective responsibility in preserving natural beauty and ecological balance.

The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, where certificates were awarded to winners of debate and poster competitions. Speakers reiterated that Earth Day serves as a vital global platform to inspire action, strengthen environmental responsibility, and unite communities in the shared mission of protecting the planet.
