RAWALPINDI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Apr, 2026) District Health Officer (Preventive Services) Rawalpindi Dr Hafiz Jawad Zahid on World Malaria Day reaffirmed the district’s commitment to sustained surveillance and timely response to prevent malaria transmission.
Dr. Jawad while talking to APP here on Saturday, said that Rawalpindi health teams were maintaining vigilant monitoring, strengthening early detection and ensuring prompt treatment in line with national guidelines. He stressed that continuous surveillance and coordinated field activities remained essential to keeping malaria under control.
"Entomologists and Communicable Disease Control (CDC) officers had been trained in integrated vector control measures, while laboratory staff received specialized training in malaria microscopy to enhance diagnostic accuracy", he added.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged countries, including Pakistan, to intensify efforts to prevent a resurgence of malaria, saying that ending the disease was now within reach.
In a press release issued on World Malaria Day, WHO highlighted that Pakistan had reduced malaria incidence by 10 per cent in 2025 compared to the previous year, though it still reported around 1.8 million cases.
"The country continues to recover from a surge triggered by the 2022 climate-driven floods, which pushed cases to a peak of 2.7 million in 2023", said the statement.
