US Embassy hosts FIFA World Cup 2026 ceremony

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th May, 2026) The launch event for the FIFA World Cup 2026 was held at the Embassy of the United States of America in Islamabad on Tuesday, where diplomats, government officials and football representatives highlighted the unifying power of sports and the growing cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.

Speaking at the ceremony, United States Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker said the FIFA World Cup 2026 would bring the world together through the spirit of sportsmanship and cultural exchange. She thanked the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), President Mohsin Gilani, and sponsors McDonald’s and Coca-Cola for supporting the event.

She noted that American companies operating in Pakistan contribute significantly to employment and economic activity in the country. She also praised Forward Sports, the Pakistan-based manufacturer regarded as one of the world’s leading football producers, for its contribution to global football.

Recalling her recent visit to Sialkot, Natalie said she witnessed the craftsmanship and dedication involved in producing world-class footballs used in FIFA tournaments.

A documentary video was also screened during the event, showcasing the manufacturing process and the hard work behind the production of footballs for FIFA World Cups.

Describing football as ‘the world’s game,’ she said the sport speaks a universal language of determination, hope and unity. She noted that the FIFA World Cup 2026 would be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and matches across 16 host cities.

“For the United States, this is an opportunity to welcome the world through culture and sports,” she said, adding that the tournament would strengthen people-to-people ties.

Referring to remarks by United States President Donald Trump, she said the World Cup would would provide an opportunity to showcase the beauty and diversity of the United States to the world.

Natalie also highlighted that the tournament would coincide with celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States on July 4, and would precede another major international sporting event, the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, President Pakistan Football Federation, Syed Mohsin Gilani, termed the event a milestone and highlighted recent achievements of Pakistan including participation in the FIFAe World Cup, improved performances at youth level, and progress in futsal and women’s football.

He thanked Natalie for her diplomatic efforts and commitment to strengthening ties between the people of Pakistan and the United States through sports diplomacy. “Sports connect people, and we want to continue engaging with the United States in this field,” he said.

He also praised FIFA President Gianni Infantino for initiatives aimed at engaging youth in healthy activities and promoting mental well-being through sports.

In a video message, FIFA President described football as a powerful tool for connecting people and fostering friendship. He commended the US Embassy for organizing the launch event and said the FIFA World Cup 2026 would create history by bringing people together from around the globe.

Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, the chief guest at the ceremony, said sports have the power to unite people across cultures and borders.

“Football is a global game that teaches respect, leadership and teamwork. It inspires people to dream bigger and demonstrates the importance of sports diplomacy in strengthening people-to-people connections.”

He added that the FIFA World Cup 2026 would be a historic event, attracting millions of fans worldwide and promoting tourism, culture and international engagement.

Abbasi also stressed the importance of encouraging youth participation in sports, saying it builds confidence, discipline and hope.

The ceremony concluded with an exchange of commemorative gifts and the unveiling of the official FIFA World Cup 2026 football.
