Trump says peace deal with Iran ‘largely negotiated’ with strait of Hormuz to open

WASHINGTON, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th May, 2026) US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the United States was close to reaching an agreement with Iran toward ending its war against the Islamic Republic and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway whose closure has sent global fuel prices soaring.

In a post on Truth Social, the president provided few details about the preliminary agreement, which he said was “largely negotiated.”

Trump said he was in the Oval Office when he held a “very good call” with regional leaders including Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed, and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Trump wrote, “Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly."

There was no immediate confirmation from Iran, The New York Times said. But it said three senior Iranian officials indicated that Tehran had agreed to a memorandum of understanding that would stop the fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon; reopen the Strait of Hormuz without any tolls; and lift the U.S. naval blockade on Iran.

The officials, who spoke to the Times on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, added that the fate of Iran’s nuclear programme, which had been a major point of contention, would be negotiated within 30 to 60 days.

Earlier Saturday, Esmail Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, said Washington and Tehran were in the “final stage” of drafting a memorandum of understanding, adding that they “may be able to reach a mutually acceptable solution.”

Trump’s announcement followed a wave of last-ditch diplomatic efforts to stave off a return to full-scale war, with Pakistani and Qatari mediators traveling to Iran, and Trump’s call with middle Eastern leaders. Trump also said he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose country joined the initial attack in late February that launched the war.

The United States, Israel and Iran agreed to a cease-fire in early April after more than a month of war. The truce was intended to allow talks on Iran’s nuclear programme and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to analysts, the reported involvement of multiple Gulf and regional powers highlights the broad diplomatic push aimed at securing a framework agreement covering security arrangements and maritime access in the Gulf region.

If finalized, the deal would mark a significant development in efforts to stabilize tensions that have intensified in recent months across the Middle East.
