Trump prepares new import tariffs on dozens of countries

WASHINGTON: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-July 21st, 2026) US President Donald Trump is preparing to impose a new round of import tariffs on dozens of countries later this week as the temporary 10% global tariff regime approaches its expiration.

The US media reported that the new duties could take effect after the current 10% temporary global tariff expires on Friday.

While the baseline 10% tariff is expected to remain in place for most countries, the Trump administration is also working on a legal framework to introduce higher tariff rates where applicable.

The latest move comes after the administration announced a 50% tariff on Canadian automobiles and several other goods, which is scheduled to take effect next month.

The tariff policy follows a significant legal setback earlier this year. On February 20, 2026, the US Supreme Court ruled that President Trump’s permanent tariff programme was unconstitutional, striking down duties imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

In its ruling, the court held that Congress had not granted the president the authority to impose import duties under the IEEPA, rendering those tariffs invalid.

Following the ruling, the Trump administration invoked Section 122 of US trade law to introduce a temporary 15% global tariff. However, the provision allows such tariffs to remain in force for only 150 days.

That temporary authority is set to expire on July 24, 2026, prompting the administration to seek alternative legal grounds to maintain or expand its tariff policy. Officials are expected to announce further details on the new measures in the coming days.
