SLF, GB wildlife department sign pact to boost conservation efforts

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Apr, 2026) The Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF) and the Forest, Wildlife and Environment Department Gilgit-Baltistan here Wednesday signed an agreement aimed at improving wildlife management and strengthening conservation efforts in the region.

Under the partnership, the two sides would collaborate on scientific research and conservation of the snow leopard and its habitat. Planned activities include camera trapping, environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, genetic sampling, satellite collaring, and surveys of prey species.

Efforts to manage human-wildlife conflict would also be enhanced through the construction of predator-proof corrals, introduction of livestock insurance schemes, and vaccination of livestock to improve animal health.

Gilgit-Baltistan hosted a diverse range of wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard found in its high-altitude mountains. SLF has been working in the area for several years, in collaboration with local communities and government departments, to conserve the species and study its ecosystem through scientific methods.

The foundation’s work spanned research and conservation, along with awareness and advocacy initiatives among communities living near wildlife habitats.

Officials from the wildlife department appreciated SLF’s role in conservation and assured full support to expand efforts for the protection of snow leopards, their prey, and fragile mountain ecosystems.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the government by Syed Abdul Waheed Shah, Secretary FWED, Dr Zakir Hussain, Chief Conservator Parks and Wildlife Department, and Inayat Ullah Sheikh, Deputy Secretary FWED. Representing SLF, Dr Hussain Ali, Senior Regional Programme Manager GB, and Dr Jaffar Ud Din, Deputy Director, signed the document.

On the occasion, Dr Hussain Ali presented a souvenir to Syed Abdul Waheed Shah.

Both sides expressed hope that the partnership would strengthen ongoing conservation work and yield long-term benefits for wildlife and local communities in Gilgit-Baltistan.
