Sindh Cabinet Sub-Committee on Food reviews overall wheat production outlook, pricing trends

KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 27th Feb, 2026) Sindh Cabinet Sub-Committee on food with Sindh Minister for Food, Makhdoom Mehboub uz Zaman in chair reviewed the overall wheat production outlook, pricing trends, stock position, and supply management across the province.

The meeting was attended by Provincial Minister for Agriculture Sardar Muhammad Bux Mahar, Provincial Minister for Irrigation Jam Khan Shoro, Giyan Chand Essarani, Chairman Anti-Corruption Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, Secretary Food, and other senior officials.

During the meeting, a detailed briefing was given on wheat cultivation, expected production, market prices, and release of government stocks to ensure market stability and uninterrupted supply.

It was informed that wheat has been cultivated over 1.484 million acres across Sindh this year.

The Food Minister stated that a record production of 4.50 million metric tons is expected during the current season, reflecting improved agricultural performance and coordinated policy measures. The committee was informed that for Karachi, 360,000 metric tons of wheat have been allocated.

Out of this allocation, 145,000 metric tons have already been released to maintain consistent supply and prevent artificial shortages in the metropolitan city.

The meeting was further informed that wheat prices in the open market have declined significantly.

The price of 100 kilograms of wheat, which previously stood at around Rs. 11,500, has decreased to approximately Rs. 9,003, indicating improved supply conditions and effective market management.

Makhdoom Mehboub uz Zaman expressed satisfaction over the notable reduction in wheat prices, stating that the decline is beginning to provide tangible relief to the public.

The committee was also informed that from 2017 to 2023, wheat stocks were regularly released to stabilize the market and prevent price volatility. The same proactive approach is being continued to ensure transparency and availability.

The chair directed strict monitoring against hoarding and emphasized effective enforcement measures to curb artificial price manipulation.

He reiterated that consumer protection and market stability remain the government’s top priorities.

The meeting reaffirmed the Sindh Government’s commitment to ensuring adequate wheat availability, maintaining price discipline, and safeguarding the public from any artificial shortage or exploitative practices.
