NADRA introduces new rule for ID card

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th May, 2026) The National Database and Registration Authority (National Database and Registration Authority) has introduced new rules regarding the issuance of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs).

According to the updated regulations, providing a signature has been made optional for individuals applying for an identity card for the first time. In cases where an applicant does not provide a signature, “NA” will be entered in the signature field on the CNIC.

NADRA stated that no thumb impression or any alternative mark will be printed in place of a signature on the identity card.

The authority also noted that thumbprint images will not be used, in view of concerns related to forgery and misuse.

A spokesperson said an awareness campaign has been launched for illiterate applicants and individuals unable to sign. Applicants have also been instructed not to upload thumbprint images when submitting applications through the mobile application.

The authority further clarified that adding or changing a signature on a CNIC will require submission of a formal modification (correction) request.

According to NADRA, the new measures aim to improve transparency and simplify the process of issuing identity documents.
