SBM gathering to mark world rivers day, throw flowers into Indus river

MUZAFFARGARH, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Mar, 2026) In line with the World Rivers Day, observed every year on Mar 14, a gathering was held at Taunsa Barrage by the Sindhu Bachao Movement (SBM), a fishermen's organization, near mighty river Indus, on Monday.

The event was attended by people from various walks of life, including students, activists, and journalists, who expressed solidarity with the river-dependent communities and threw bunches of flowers into the river Indus.

The participants spoke in favour of saving the fishermen and river dependent communities and urged the government to take steps for their welfare and their traditional way of life.

They said, communities and their livelihood and culture are tied to the Indus river.

Khadem Hussain, a member of the Sindhu Bachao Movement, stated that the communities were settled in the area as part of a resettlement project funded by the World Bank for the Taunsa Barrage rehabilitation project.

The participants said that the authorities should recognize the fishing communities as guardians of the Indus river, respecting their right to live and earn a livelihood along the river.

The gathering concluded with a march to the western bank of the Indus river, where participants offered flowers to the river and pledged to protect it from pollution and environmental degradation.
