SAU launches one year diploma in GIS, Remote Sensing

HYDERABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 11th Mar, 2026) The Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam has launched a one year diploma program in Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing System, with 32 students enrolled in the first batch.

According to a university spokesperson on Wednesday, the diploma program has been initiated at the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, while the inaugural ceremony was held at the faculty’s auditorium hall.

Speaking on the occasion, the vice chancellor Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal said the GIS system enables better and timely planning in the agriculture sector, which can help increase production as well as address challenges faced by the farming community.

He said GIS was an effective tool not only for agriculture but also for various sectors including livestock, education, health, governance and social development.

The vice chancellor said under this postgraduate diploma program, students would be trained in GIS, remote sensing, satellite image interpretation, local data analysis and GPS based data collection so that they can apply these modern technologies in agriculture, water management, environmental monitoring, disaster preparedness and urban planning.

Dr. Siyal further said the university would soon launch diploma programs in different fields including livestock assistant and field assistant to equip youth with practical skills and create better employment opportunities.

Dean of the faculty of agricultural engineering Dr. Munir Ahmed Mangrio said such programs were highly beneficial for transferring knowledge to the young generation and the SAU would continue to play its role in this regard.

Focal person of the postgraduate GIS diploma program Dr. Muhammad Sohail Memon briefed the participants about the program and said that 32 students from different academic and professional backgrounds had been admitted in the first batch. He said the one year diploma program consists of two semesters and a total of 30 credit hours including course work as well as a practical research project.

On the occasion, Dr. Irfan Ahmed Shaikh, Kuldeep Kumar and others also addressed the ceremony. Dean of the faculty of crop protection Dr. Abdul Mubeen Lodhi, Dr. Farman Chandio, Mashooq Talpur, Dr. Mehmood Laghari and a large number of male and female students were also present on the occasion.
