US secretary of state says Washington seeks a lasting and verifiable agreement that promotes stability without compromising the security or economic interests of Gulf nations
DUBAI: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-June 25th, 2026) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that any future understanding between Washington and Tehran would not jeopardise the security interests of Gulf countries, stressing that the United States remains committed to protecting its regional allies while pursuing diplomatic engagement with Iran.
Speaking at a joint meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and US officials in Bahrain, Rubio said Washington seeks a lasting and verifiable agreement that promotes stability without compromising the security or economic interests of Gulf nations.
He emphasised that the United States supports diplomacy but would only back an arrangement that delivers long-term results and safeguards regional peace.
Addressing concerns regarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, Rubio said the strategic waterway must remain open for international shipping and commerce. He warned that permitting any country to impose charges on vessels using international maritime routes could have serious consequences for global trade and set an undesirable precedent.

He also reiterated Washington's position that Iran must not develop nuclear weapons, describing it as a key requirement for any future agreement.
The US secretary of state said his country remains prepared to pursue diplomatic efforts with Tehran, provided any agreement is enforceable, transparent and contributes to regional stability.
Meanwhile, Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani welcomed Oman's initiative aimed at facilitating the safe movement of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. He said efforts to ensure secure maritime navigation were important for regional stability and international commerce.
The discussions focused on regional security, maritime safety and ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and promoting stability across the Gulf region.
