Rs. 17bn cardiology institute to provide modern heart care facilities in Gujranwala: health minister

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd May, 2026) Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique has said that a state-of-the-art Maryam Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology is being constructed in Gujranwala at a cost of Rs. 17 billion to provide modern cardiac healthcare facilities to millions of people of Gujranwala division.

He expressed these views while chairing an important meeting held to review the establishment and administrative affairs of the institute on Sunday. During the meeting, a detailed briefing was given regarding the progress of the project, available resources and future targets.

Khawaja Salman Rafique said the Punjab government is committed to providing the best cardiac treatment facilities to the public and added that work is also underway for the improvement of Wazirabad Institute of Cardiology. He said the new institute would prove to be a milestone in providing modern and quality treatment for heart diseases, adding that bringing advanced medical facilities to the doorsteps of people remains the government’s top priority.

Chairman Punjab Chief Minister Advisory Committee on Cardiology Dr. Farqad Alamgir said the meeting reiterated the commitment to develop the institute on modern lines so that people of Gujranwala and surrounding areas would no longer need to travel to major cities for heart treatment.

Secretary Health Punjab Azmat Mahmood said the institution would be equipped with modern medical equipment, expert doctors and patient-friendly facilities, making it a practical example of public service.

The meeting was also attended by Health Economist Dr. Muhammad Adnan Khan, Vice Chancellor University of Child Health Sciences Professor Masood Sadiq, while the IDAP team participated through video link.
