The initiative, introduced under the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aims to encourage responsible driving habits and improve road safety standards across the province

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-June 18th, 2026) The Punjab government has introduced a juvenile driving permit facility for individuals aged 16 years and above as part of efforts to promote safe and legal driving among young people.

The initiative, introduced under the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aims to encourage responsible driving habits and improve road safety standards across the province.

Under the new system, teenagers aged between 16 and 18 years will now be eligible to obtain a juvenile permit to legally operate motorcycles, subject to specified conditions. Previously, individuals were required to wait until the age of 18 to obtain a regular driving licence.

Officials said the juvenile permit has been divided into two age categories. Applicants aged 16 to 17 years will be required to pay a fee of Rs1,000, while those aged 17 to 18 years will pay Rs500.

According to the City Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, holders of juvenile permits will not be allowed to exceed a speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour while riding motorcycles. He further stated that parental or guardian consent has been made mandatory for all applicants.

The local authorities have also instructed that applicants must appear along with their parents or legal guardians when applying for the permit. Guardians are required to bring a copy of their national identity card and a passport-sized photograph.

The CTO said the purpose of the initiative is to promote a culture of responsible driving among young individuals, ensure compliance with traffic laws, and strengthen road safety practices.

The officials added that the scheme is part of broader efforts to modernise the licensing system while ensuring safety and accountability on roads across Punjab.
