ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-June 23rd, 2026) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian departed Tehran on Tuesday for a one-day official visit to Pakistan, Iranian media reported, as regional diplomatic activity intensifies following Pakistan-mediated discussions between Tehran and Washington in Switzerland.

The visit comes shortly after Islamabad and Doha announced that the initial round of high-level talks between the United States and Iran, held in the Swiss resort town of Bürgenstock, produced a 60-day framework aimed at reaching a final agreement. The discussions reportedly focused on reducing regional tensions and building a roadmap for sustained dialogue.

According to Habibollah Abbasi, Director of Public Relations at the Iranian President’s Office, President Pezeshkian will use the visit to express gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for Pakistan’s role in facilitating diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States.

The Foreign Office of Pakistan confirmed the visit, stating that the Iranian president will arrive in Islamabad accompanied by a high-level delegation, including ministers and senior officials.

During his stay, President Pezeshkian is scheduled to meet Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and hold formal talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The meetings are expected to cover the full spectrum of bilateral relations, with a focus on expanding cooperation in trade, energy, border security, regional connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges.

The Foreign Office added that the visit will also provide an opportunity to review ongoing diplomatic initiatives following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, alongside discussions on regional and international developments of mutual interest.

It described the visit as a reflection of the “historic and cultural ties” between Pakistan and Iran and a shared commitment to regional peace and stability.

This marks President Pezeshkian’s second visit to Pakistan since assuming office.

Meanwhile, mediators said the US–Iran talks in Switzerland made “encouraging progress,” though differences remain on key regional security issues, including tensions involving Lebanon and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy shipping route.

A joint statement issued by Pakistan and Qatar said both sides had agreed to a 60-day roadmap toward a potential final agreement, with technical-level discussions continuing in the coming days.

The statement also noted progress on mechanisms aimed at de-escalating violence in Lebanon, where clashes have intensified between US ally Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah, as well as the establishment of communication channels to ensure safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

US Vice President JD Vance said the initial round of talks had laid a strong foundation for further negotiations aimed at reducing conflict in the middle East.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the engagement efforts of all parties and acknowledged the role of friendly countries in facilitating dialogue. He particularly expressed gratitude to Qatar and Switzerland for supporting and hosting the diplomatic process, calling it an important step toward regional stability.
