Pakistan faces a historic energy crunch as regional conflict sent global oil prices soaring above $100. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif just unveiled a 14-point emergency strategy to save the economy. From “work from home Pakistan” mandates to massive salary cuts for the elite, the nation is entering a strict survival mode.
The flames of war in the Middle East have reached Pakistan’s doorstep, not through missiles, but through a crippling economic shock. Addressing a worried nation on Monday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif linked the “serious and dangerous” regional escalation—marked by the martyrdom of Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei and strikes across the Gulf—directly to the holes in the national pocket.
With global oil benchmarks crossing $100 per barrel, the Prime Minister admitted his “heart worried” for the poor, even as his “mind” saw no choice but to hike petroleum prices. To cushion the blow, he is turning the screws on the government itself.
The 14-Point Austerity Blitz
The Shehbaz Sharif austerity plan hits the ruling class first. For the next two months, federal and provincial ministers, along with special assistants, will draw zero salary. Members of Parliament face a 25% pay cut, while high-ranking officers (Grade 20+) earning over 300,000 rupees will lose two days’ pay.
Operational changes are even more drastic. Government departments must slash expenses by 20% and fuel usage for official vehicles by 50%. In a move to protect foreign reserves, a blanket ban now exists on foreign trips for all officials, including the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers, unless absolutely vital for national interest.
Work From Home Pakistan
To curb fuel consumption, the government is fundamentally altering how the country works. A mandatory work from home Pakistan policy now applies to 50% of staff across public and private sectors. Furthermore, government offices will shrink their operations to a four-day work week. While banks remain exempt to keep the financial gears turning, the rest of the bureaucracy is staying home to save every drop of petrol.
Education and Public Life on Pause
The impact extends to the youth. Schools will shutter for two weeks starting this weekend, while universities must pivot to online classes immediately. The era of lavish official protocols is also over:
- No Official Dinners: A complete ban on state-funded banquets and Iftar parties.
- Venue Shifts: All seminars and conferences must move from luxury hotels to government buildings.
- Purchasing Freeze: No new air conditioners, furniture, or office equipment.
Regional Stakes and Security
Beyond the balance sheets, Sharif highlighted the “brutal” reality of the conflict. Pakistan remains in mourning over the loss of Iranian leadership and has strongly condemned attacks on brotherly nations like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.
Closer to home, the Prime Minister praised the armed forces for defending the western border against infiltrations from Afghanistan. He framed these austerity measures as a collective sacrifice needed to safeguard sovereignty while the world’s energy heartland remains “engulfed in a severe war.”
