The PCMD Diagnostic Laboratory at the Dr Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), University of Karachi, has introduced BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 Expanded Gene Panel tests for the early detection of hereditary cancer risk

KARACHI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 8th May, 2026) The PCMD Diagnostic Laboratory at the Dr Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), University of Karachi, has introduced BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 Expanded Gene Panel tests for the early detection of hereditary cancer risk.

These tests support family risk assessment and preventive care, while also helping guide screening and risk-reduction decisions.

Prof Dr Muhammad Raza Shah, Director of the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, expressed these views while presiding over a meeting held at the PCMD Diagnostic Laboratory on Thursday.

During the meeting, Prof Raza Shah expressed satisfaction over the performance of the diagnostic laboratory at the Dr Panjwani Center, which operates under the umbrella of ICCBS, University of Karachi.

He said that the introduction of BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 diagnostic tests at PCMD would benefit individuals with a family history of breast, ovarian, or prostate cancer by helping identify inherited cancer risks at an early stage.

He added that patients diagnosed with early-onset cancer at a young age, cases of triple-negative breast cancer, and individuals with multiple cancers or strong family histories would also benefit from this facility.

Prof. Raza Shah was informed by the diagnostic experts that the testing approach includes comprehensive analysis of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, high-sensitivity detection through Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), and expert interpretation in accordance with international guidelines.

It is pertinent to mention that the Diagnostic Laboratory Network of the Dr Panjwani Center began functioning in October 2005. Since then, laboratory services have been provided through fully automated and computerized systems under the supervision of highly skilled professionals.

The laboratory network offers diagnostic services in the fields of hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology, clinical microbiology, histopathology, and molecular pathology, including FISH (Fluorescence in Situ Hybridization).

The accuracy and precision of the tests are maintained through a strict internal quality assurance program reviewed by consultants and supervisors.
