Pakistan’s First High-Speed Train to Travel From Lahore to Rawalpindi in 2 Hours 15 Minutes

The Punjab Government, in cooperation with Pakistan Railways, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for implementing the first high-speed train in the province as part of a transformation in Pakistan’s public transport system and upgrading regional rail networks.

This initiative will provide people with European-quality travel facilities while improving connectivity between major cities. The high-speed train will connect Lahore to Rawalpindi via a distance of 280 Km, using a time of 2 hours and 15 minutes to cover this distance. The proposed time-to-distance ratio will reduce current travel times significantly.

Minister Hanif Abbasi emphasized that this project is more than just speed; it is about a total system overhaul.

“We are bringing the European standard of rail travel to the 11 crore people of Punjab,” Abbasi stated. “Under the leadership of CM Maryam Nawaz, we are introducing unmanned automated systems at crossings to prevent accidents and upgrading the historic Lahore Railway Station with world-class parking and aesthetics.”

According to official estimates, approximately 90 million people are expected to benefit from these nine new routes, marking the first significant investment in railway track utility and passenger comfort in decades.
