Security officials say cross-border firing targeted areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, prompting a “timely and effective” response from Pakistani forces

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Feb 27th, 2026) Pakistan has launched an operation titled Ghazab-ul-Haq following what officials described as unprovoked firing by Afghan Taliban forces at multiple points along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, according to security sources and statements issued by the government.

Security officials said that cross-border firing targeted areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, prompting a “timely and effective” response from Pakistani forces. Retaliatory action was reported in the Nawagai sector of Bajaur, Tirah in Khyber, and the Chitral sector, where a check post across the border was allegedly destroyed during the exchange.

In the Gursal sector of Mohmand district, security sources said operations were ongoing, with several militant positions targeted. Officials claimed that multiple check posts were destroyed in Bajaur and that casualties were inflicted on the opposing side. These claims, however, could not be independently verified.

According to security sources, attempts were also made to target Pakistani check posts using quadcopters, which were intercepted and shot down.

Pakistani forces reportedly used light and heavy weapons as well as drones during the response. Authorities further alleged that misinformation and fabricated videos were being circulated on social media regarding the clashes.

In a statement posted on X, the Ministry of Information said Afghan Taliban forces had “miscalculated” by initiating unprovoked firing at several border locations, adding that Pakistan’s security forces were fully prepared to respond to any aggression. The ministry stated that action had been taken in the Chitral, Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram, and Bajaur sectors.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said Pakistan would not allow its peace to be undermined and reiterated that dialogue had always been preferred to resolve issues. He emphasized that the country would go to any extent necessary to ensure the safety of its citizens and territorial integrity.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also condemned the cross-border firing and expressed solidarity with the armed forces, reaffirming national unity in the defense of the country.
