Rescue teams are currently scouring western Iraq for survivors after a U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker went down during a high-stakes mission. While U.S. Central Command cites an “incident” in friendly airspace, local resistance groups claim a direct hit, leaving the fate of the six-person crew hanging in the balance.

The U.S. military confirmed the loss of a U.S. KC-135 refueling aircraft late Thursday during a combat sortie over western Iraq. The downed KC-135 plane participated in Operation Epic Fury, the ongoing aerial campaign targeting Iranian military infrastructure.

According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), two aircraft were involved in the mid-air event. While the first KC135 crashed, the second tanker managed a damaged but safe landing at a nearby base. Official statements currently distance the KC-135 plane crash from hostile or friendly fire, though investigations into a possible mid-air collision or mechanical failure remain active.

Conflicting Claims and Crew Status

KC-135 is normally manned by a minimum of three people. Nevertheless, it is said that at least six crew members were on board the plane when it disappeared off radar.

  • CENTCOM Statement: Affirms the loss and says it is mainly working on rescue efforts.
  • Iranian-Aligned Militia Claim: The “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” states that their militia shot down the KC-135 and that everyone aboard was killed.

The Role of the KC-135 Stratotanker

The KC-135 is at the core of American international capability. Being a flying gas station, it enables bombers and fighters to hit targets deep into Iran without necessarily landing. This aircraft accident is the fourth large aviation American crash of the hostilities since the end of February 2026.

The Boeing KC-135 is a very important but old resource. The fleet has a majority of aircraft that are more than 60 years old. This particular event puts an unending strain on the already tensed logistics of the ongoing operation Epic Fury as the missing crew is still being searched.
