A tragic gas leakage explosion at Bismillah Residency in North Nazimabad, Karachi, killed a 15-year-old boy and critically injured four family members during Sehri. The 10th-floor blast damaged adjacent apartments and the elevator, sparking a fire that required four fire tenders and two snorkels to control on February 22, 2026.
Karachities heard the sound of a massive explosion during their Sehri time today. At approximately 5:40 AM, a devastating blast in North Nazimabad turned a quiet Ramadan morning into a nightmare at the Bismillah Residency.
The explosion originated on the 10th floor of the building. Initial reports confirm a severe gas leak inside one of the apartments triggered the fire. This wasn’t just a small kitchen fire; the force was so immense that it shattered the building’s elevator and damaged four neighboring flats.
One Fatality and Multiple Critical Injuries
A 15-year-old Burhan lost his life in the tragedy. His parents, Haneen and Fatima, are currently in critical condition at the Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Burns Centre. Medical staff report they have sustained 81% and 95% burns, respectively. A four-year-old girl, Ansia, is also undergoing treatment for serious burn injuries.
Rescue Operations and Structural Damage
Firefighters moved quickly to contain the blaze. Four fire tenders and two snorkel units reached the Bismillah Residency to battle the flames. While the fire is now under control, cooling operations continue. The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) must now determine if the structure remains safe for other residents.
Public Panic in Karachi
Social media platforms erupted with footage of the blast in North Nazimabad within minutes. Residents from Gulshan-e-Iqbal to FB Area reported hearing the sound. This marks the second major gas-related blast in Karachi this week, following the recent tragedy in Soldier Bazaar.
IG Sindh Javed Alam Odho has ordered a full inquiry into the safety protocols at the building. For now, the area remains cordoned off as investigators sift through the debris of the 10th floor.
