MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Feb, 2026) A commemorative plaque was installed outside the residence of renowned poet, writer, academic and researcher Prof Anwar Jamal on Tuesday evening in recognition of his outstanding literary contributions.
The honour was conferred under “Eteraf-e-Fun” (Recognition of Art), a distinctive initiative launched by Multan Division Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan to celebrate the city’s cultural heritage. The programme aims to pay tribute to prominent figures in arts and literature by installing honorary plaques outside their homes. Prof Anwar Jamal is the 15th literary personality to be honoured under the initiative.
Born on April 1, 1948, in Gujrat (India), Prof Anwar Jamal’s real name is Anwar Hussain Bhatti. He served as principal of Government Graduate Civil Lines College, Multan, and adopted “Anwar Jamal” as his pen name.
An accomplished author, he has written 19 books spanning poetry, literary criticism, painting, humour, sketch writing and research. His work has made a significant contribution to the literary landscape of Pakistan, particularly in South Punjab. Ten M.Phil and two PhD theses have been completed on his life and literary services by scholars from various universities and colleges across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Multan Division Aamir Karim Khan described Prof Jamal as “a towering personality who has given a new dimension to the literary identity of South Punjab.” He added, “Such individuals are the pride of our region. The contributions of artists, writers, teachers and poets form a luminous chapter in our history.”
He further said that the divisional administration is also planning to recognise individuals serving in various public sector departments, adding that such initiatives boost morale and encourage excellence.
Prof Anwar Jamal’s collection of literary essays, Adabi Tassurat (Literary Impressions), is widely appreciated in academic circles, and several of his books are included in the curricula of different universities.
The ceremony was attended by government officials, social figures and members of civil society from various walks of life, reflecting strong appreciation for intellectual and cultural contributions to society. Among those who spoke on the occasion were Prof Shamim Jamal, Dr Fareha Jamshaid, Qaisar Abbas, Sajjad Jehnia and Sheikh Jamshaid Hayat.
