LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th Mar, 2026) Provincial Minister for Housing and Urban Development Bilal Yaseen on Thursday inaugurated the construction work of a water storage tank under a project aimed at storing rainwater underground near Lakshmi Chowk.
On this occasion, WASA Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed gave a detailed briefing on various aspects of the project.
During the briefing, it was stated that WASA Lahore had launched a new rainwater management and drainage system project at sewer point of Nisbat Road to address the issue of water accumulation in the city during the monsoon season. The total cost of the project was Rs 525.580 million, and it was expected to be completed within 12 months. Under the project, an underground water tank was being constructed at the Government Dyal Singh College Ground on Dil Muhammad Road, Lahore.
WASA would complete the project using its own resources, and the responsibility for its operation and maintenance will also remain with WASA Lahore. The project included modern infrastructure for effective drainage and storage of rainwater.
A 3.0 million-gallon capacity RCC underground water tank would be constructed. In addition, a 1,200-foot long RCC drainage system and a 1,600-foot long force main line with a diameter of 500 mm would also be installed.
The briefing further stated that the water tank would also include a groundwater recharge system, which will help improve the underground water level.
On this occasion, Provincial Minister Bilal Yaseen said that several underground water tanks had already been completed and made operational in different areas of Lahore. Similar projects were also underway in other districts of Punjab to ensure timely drainage from low-lying areas.
He added that the completion of these projects would help effectively control the issue of water accumulation during the monsoon season on Nisbat Road and surrounding areas, and citizens will benefit from improved drainage facilities.
WASA Vice Chairman Chaudhry Shehbaz Ahmed, WASA Punjab DG Tayyab Farid, and other relevant officials were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
